EC students to study in Cuba

Thirty-three students from the Eastern Cape have left for Cuba where they will be studying medicine.

The students, who left East London airport via Paris to Cuba on Friday, also received laptop computers from the Eastern Cape Department of Health.

The Eastern Cape students are studying in Cuba as part of the SA-Cuban medical collaboration.

Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Siyanda Manana.

"These students have been chosen from the rural areas of the Eastern Cape, from the poorest of the poor," Manana said.

However, he said "they've done well academically."

"We are working with the Department of Education, Social Development and municipalities in choosing the students that go to Cuba," Manana added.

He said another batch of 54 students will leave the province for Cuba in January to study medicine there for the next seven years.
