EC SOPA guest list swells for Mabuyane’s swansong

Bhisho has set aside R1.5 million rand for this year's State of the Province address by Premier Oscar Mabuyane, the final one of the sixth administration.

The official opening of the Legislature takes place on Thursday, and the number of guests has also swelled from 472 to 1750 this year.

The extensive guest list includes Kings and Queens, Traditional leaders, Speakers, and mayors from municipalities, and representatives from political parties among other stakeholders.

Bhisho said SOPA accords Mabuyane an opportunity to account to the citizens of the province what his government had done to improve their lives over the past four years.

The Premier is also expected to outline the priorities for the Eastern Cape for the year ahead.

The Speaker to the Legislature, Helen Sauls-August noted the significance of this year's State of the Province address.

She said it would be the last SOPA for the 6th term of administration, while also celebrating 30 years of freedom and democracy.

“So it is befitting that more people are part of the event to understand the significance of the event, which will culminate into the tabling of the Provincial Budget, policy speeches, and subsequent budget considerations and adoption by the Provincial Legislature," she said.

The State of the Province Address for 2024 will take place on Thursday, 22 February at the Abbotsford Christian Church in East London.
