EC SAPS appeal for information on rhino poaching

Eastern Cape police are appealing to the public for information that will lead to the arrest of rhino poachers, running amuck in the province.

The appeal comes after the carcasses of two rhino, a cow and a calf, were discovered on a game farm outside Grahamstown on Thursday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Khaya Tonjeni, said both the "calf and the mother were shot and dehorned."

"A criminal case has been opened for investigation.  An urgent appeal is made for information that may assist in the investigation.  Any nearest police station can be contacted at the SAPS Crime Stop number 086 001 0111 or Crimeline  32211.  He said all information will be treated confidentially.

The discovery of the two rhino on Thursday came just days after three rhino were poached and their horns removed on Sibuya Game Reserve at Kenton-on-Sea.

Two rhino died after being darted and their horns removed.  The third, who initially survived being dehorned, died later on the reserve.

The Herald reports that the latest rhino deaths brings to ten the number of rhino killed in the Eastern Cape in 2016.
