Eastern Cape police have arrested five business robbery suspects following an intelligence-driven operation by members from the Amathole and Chris Hani policing districts.
Police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni, said the arrests were made in Komani on Thursday with the assistance of the K9 unit, Flying Squad, and members of a private security company.
She said police had received a tip-off following business robberies in Butterworth and Ngqamakwe during the day.
Mdleleni said the members followed up on the information and came upon a Ford Figo on the N6 which was stopped.
The suspects, aged between 22 and 35, were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen items valued at around R120 000, as well as an undisclosed amount of money, and two unlicenced firearms and ammunition.
"The five men are due to appear in the Komani Magistrate's Court on Monday, on charges ranging from possession of stolen property to possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition (two counts) with a possibility of additional charges at the later stage of the investigation," Mdleleni said.
