The Eastern Cape Transport Department said that there were 48 fatalities on the province’s roads since the country moved to Level 2 of the lockdown.
Department spokesperson, Khuselwa Rantjie, said that their records show that there were 33 crashes since last Tuesday.
“Of the 48 fatalities 15 were pedestrians,” she said.
Rantjie said the past weekend alone there were 16 accidents which claimed the lives of 17 people including six pedestrians.
“As a department, we are saddened by the unnecessary loss of life which we continue to experience on our roads. Speeding and reckless or negligent driving have been some of the major contributing factors to the incidents we have seen in the recent past,” she said.
The Eastern Cape Transport Ministry has appealed to all road users to take extra care and obey the rules of the road.
