EC rapist sentenced to 28 years

The Butterworth Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced a 27-year-old man to 28 years imprisonment for two cases of rape, police said on Thursday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the accused first raped a 19-year-old woman on the 14 June 2013 at about 21:15 at Nqabarha Location, Thafeni Village, Dutywa in the Easter Cape.

He said the victim and the accused were coming from a tavern when he made advances which she rejected.

The 27-year-old then grabbed the woman and raped her. He was later traced and arrested and later released on bail.

While the 27-year-old was on bail he raped a 15-year-old girl.

On Wednesday he was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for the rape of the 19-year-old and 20 years for raping the 15-year-old.

Police said in 2015 while the accused was out on bail he met a group of young school girls, who were from a netball match at the Bhongweni Location, Mangathi Village, Dutywa in the Eastern Cape

“He drew his knife and chased them. Unfortunately he caught up with a 15-year-old girl and dragged her to nearby bushes where he raped her,” recalled Manatha. Police traced and arrested the suspect, who will serve a total of 28 years in prison for the two cases of rape he was convicted for.

Butterworth Cluster Commander, Brigadier Trevor Mey, congratulated Butterworth police for properly investigating crimes against women and children. He also welcomed the sentence and hoped it would serve as a deterrent.
