A 35-year-old man who had raped an elderly woman in a locality near Ngqeleni in the Eastern Cape has died after being assaulted by members of the community.
Police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena, said the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning when residents of Bukwini Locality went to the aid of the 70-year-old woman.
She said the man had attacked and raped the woman, threatening to stab her.
Koena said the woman, who is recovering hospital, was able to disarm the assailant and also stab him before members of the community arrived and assaulted him further.
Eastern Cape police condemned the mob killing and said the perpetrators will be arrested.
