An official from St Albans Medium B Correctional Centre in Port Elizabeth has been caught attempting to smuggle contraband into the facility.
The Department of Correctional Services said he was arrested on Friday morning after trying to evade a routine search of vehicles at the prison entrance.
Spokesperson, Nobuntu Gantana, said that the official approached the gate in his vehicle, but then turned the car around and drove away when he noticed that a search was being conducted by members of the National Task Team.
“Instructions were given to NTT officials to chase the vehicle and escort him back to access control,” she said.
Gantana said three members of the SAPS assisted in the search of the prison official’s vehicle.
She said they found 120 Mandrax tablets, 14 cell phone start packs for all mobile networks, five cell phones, earphones and chargers.
“The official was subsequently arrested on Friday and he is currently in SAPS custody. A case has been opened and he is due to appear in court on 19 October 2020,” Gantana said.
