Death toll at Middelburg protest climbs to two


Police in Middelburg in the Eastern Cape are investigating a case of culpable homicide after two people had been when they were struck by a passing truck on Friday morning.

Spokesperson Colonel Sibongile Soci says protesters blocked all the entrances to town and the situation got extremely tense.

She says a 20-year-old man died at the scene whilst a 38-year-old man who was injured, died later in hospital.

Protesters have been blocking the N10, N9 and R56 since Wednesday.

It is not clear what the protest is about.

Colonel Soci says any person who might have witnessed the incident is asked to come forward.

The truck driver did stop after the accident and was interviewed by police.

She says the situation remains tense and Public Order Police have been deployed to monitor the situation.

Motorists are advised to make use of alternative routes where possible travelling to Colesburg, Steynsburg, Graaff-Reinet and Cradock.
