Two Eastern Cape Education Department officials are facing serious allegations of misconduct involving learners during school hours.
The Department said in a statement on Monday that the principal of a school in Mount Fletcher is under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct.
MEC, Fundile Gade, said the Department learned about the matter on Sunday following posts on social media.
“This morning a team consisting of labour relations officers and members of Management and Governance were dispatched to investigate the matter and submit a preliminary report,” the Department said.
The report, which would be presented to MEC Gade on Wednesday by the HOD, will recommend steps to be followed based on the evidence gathered.
Police meanwhile, said no charges have been laid as yet.
However, provincial spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, said members of their Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit visited the school on Monday to follow up on the matter and encouraged any learner who may want to open a case to do so.
Meanwhile, the Department said that a scholar transport operator at the Moshesh Agricultural High School in Matatiele has been suspended after a video showed him drinking and letting a learner drive the school bus full of children.
“The department learnt of the matter through social media and the operator has since been served with a suspension letter while alternative measures are being implemented to ensure learners are not left stranded,” Gade said.
