EC Premier says talk less and do more #SOPA

Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, said officials must talk less, do more and open lines of communication with the people.

"In short, we will get things done," he said.

Mabuyane, on Friday, delivered his maiden State of the Province Address in the Bhisho Legislature, saying that those were the three ground rules that the Provincial Executive, Mayors and Government Officials must adhere to.

Leading by example, the Premier slashed the budget for the State of the Province Address from around R5m to no more than R800 000, saying that the savings will go towards government projects.

In his address inside the Provincial Legislature and not in rented marquees as has been the norm, Mabuyane outlined seven key priorities for his Sixth Administration.

  • Economic transformation and job creation
  • Education, skills and health
  • Consolidating the social wage through reliable and quality basic services
  • Spatial integration, human settlements and local government and
  • Social cohesion and safe communities
  • A better Africa and a better world
  • A capable, ethical and developmental state

"We will not re-invent the wheel, but we will build on the foundation that has been laid by the five administrations that came before us since the dawn of democracy," he said.

He said earlier this year, the MEC for Finance announced an investment of R1 billion from the provincial fiscus to stimulate our economy.

"We have approved 16 projects to benefit from the R336.9 million that has been allocated for this financial year. These projects too will create new sustainable jobs for the people of our province," he said in a wide-ranging address, covering some 32 pages.

But, some opposition parties said his speech was light on detail, particularly around job creation and economic growth.

"His commitment to half the provincial unemployment rate will remain a pipe dream unless the government embarks on fundamental economic reforms. None of which were mentioned in the speech," said DA provincial leader, Nqaba Bhanga.

EFF provincial leader, Yazini Tetyana, said Mabuyane did not provide details about how he is going to achieve these seven key objectives that he spoke about, particularly job creation.

"Over 2.2 million people are in search of jobs in this province.  If you are not speaking to them as to how they are going to get jobs, you have not spoken," he said.
