Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane, says he's extremely pleased with the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to reinstate the ban on the sale of alcohol.
He says liquor sales have put an unwanted strain on the province's healthcare system.
Mabuyane says the ban should also provide the liquor industry and government ample time to work together to implement effective behavioural change campaigns on responsible alcohol use.
The Premier says inspectors from the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, along with law enforcement agencies, will closely monitor and strictly enforce the new regulations.
Earlier this week the EC Liquor Board sent out a stern warning for people to refrain from selling or consuming deadly homemade brews.
This after President Cyril Ramaphosa reinstated the ban of alcohol on Sunday.
During level 5 of the lockdown when the sale of alcohol was first prohibited, approximately 16 people from the Eastern Cape died in separate incidents after consuming homemade brews.
EC Liquor Board Spokesperson, Mgwebi Msiya, has cautioned members of the public to refrain from consuming the liquor mixed with methylated spirits as it could be dangerous.
He said they would collaborate with various law enforcement agencies in monitoring compliance with the new regulations, and where transgressions were identified, necessary steps would be taken to curb such behaviour.
Mgwebi also urged community members to report cases of non-compliance with liquor regulations to the nearest police stations.
