Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane has called for calm, following the emergence of the new Covid-19 variant, Omicron.
He has urged residents, as well as those returning home for the festive period from other provinces and elsewhere to maintain compliance to basic non-pharmaceutical interventions to help contain the spread of the virus and minimize the rate of new infections.
The Premier also urged the public to continue wearing face masks in public areas, maintain social distancing, and to sanitize.

‘’Many jobs have been shed and this has had devastating consequences for the poor and working-class as businesses shut down. We are now starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, as we have largely managed to stabilize the rate of active cases curve and as well as the rate of new infections curve. We have managed to get here because we have largely supported the COVID-19 mitigation strategy and safety regulations’’, said Mabuyane.
‘’We hope to learn more from the scientific community in the coming days and weeks about this new Omicron variant and how best to confront it going forward, in the meantime we call for calm and for each of us to continue doing what we have been doing in the fight against COVID-19’’, he added.
