File

An Eastern Cape policeman was wounded when gunmen attacked a Post Office in a village near Tsolo on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkos Kinana, said the incident happened at Ngcolosi Administrative Area when four men armed with AK47 rifles held social grant beneficiaries at gunpoint.

He said the policeman was wounded in the upper body during an exchange of gunfire with the men, who took the policeman’s automatic rifle and pistol before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Kinana said they hijacked a vehicle from a person nearby to make their escape and the vehicle was later found abandoned about 20km’s away.

The wounded policeman was rushed to the hospital where he is said to be in a stable condition.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga vowed “that the police will not rest until the suspects are found. “

Cases of “business robbery and attempted murder” have been registered for investigation.
