Eastern Cape Safety MEC, Helen Sauls-August has welcomed the conviction of a Flagstaff policeman on a charge of stock theft.
Flagstaff station commissioner, lieutenant-colonel Mthengana, was convicted on Monday and sentenced to a fine of R10 000 or 20-months in jail.
He previously worked for the stock theft unit in Mthatha before his deployment to Flagstaff 5 months ago.
Mthengana now faces internal disciplinary action which includes a determination of his suitability to continue as a police officer.
The spokesperson for Bhisho's Safety Ministry, Lwandile Sicwetsha.
"Any police official who gets involved in criminal activities compromises the integrity of the police service, and people will not be able to come forward to report criminal activities to the police. We do not expect SAPS members to be implicated in such activities they should be above reproach" Sicwetsha said.
