The Hawks in the Eastern Cape have arrested a 36-year-old police official and a 29-year-old petrol attendant on fraud charges in Bizana.
Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana says it is alleged that Sergeant Zwelakhe Gwevu colluded with the petrol attendant, Buyisile Mazwi to fraudulently utilise a SAPS petrol card to fill up the state vehicle.
"On 13 June 2023, it is alleged that the officer took a SAPS vehicle to a local garage to fill up with fuel. Later, it was discovered that the policeman allegedly conspired with the petrol attendant to fraudulently utilise a SAPS petrol card to pretend to fill up the state vehicle", Mhlakuvana said.
The two allegedly orchestrated the fraudulent transaction to an amount of R1269-90 and it was further revealed that the suspects filled up the SAPS vehicle with an amount of R869-90.
During a vehicle inspection, it was found that the state suffered a loss of R400.
Mhlakuvana says investigations indicated that both accused equally benefited from this amount.
Sergeant Gwevu was released on bail of R2 000 while Mazwi was released on warning.
The matter was postponed to 7 December for legal representation.
