Two female patients being ferried by ambulance to an Eastern Cape hospital have died in a head-on collision involving another provincial government vehicle.
The provincial health department said the accident occurred on the R-61 between Cofimvaba and Komani on Thursday afternoon.
Spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said the patients, who were being taken to Frontier Hospital, died on the scene.
He said the ambulance crew, a man and a woman, sustained serious injuries and had to be freed from the wreckage using the jaws of life.
The driver of the other vehicle, which belonged to the EC Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform, also sustained serious injuries in the crash.
A case of culpable homicide will be investigated by Bolothwa police.
