East London police are investigating the murder of a man in his forties who was shot dead in his car at traffic lights near the Gonubie off-ramp.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the man was shot by unidentified suspects near Gonubie offramp at the robots.
The deceased, reportedly a senior Fort Hare University (UFH) official, sustained injuries to the upper body.
Kinana said the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation and no arrests have been made at this stage as suspects are still at large,” Kinana said.
A case of Murder has been opened and the investigation is continuing.
A Spokesperson for the UFH JP Roodt confirmed the death of one of their own employees.
He said the University will not be responding to speculation from the media that this was a planned assassination or a fatal hijacking.
Roodt says there have been several reports in the media lately about violent crime in the Gonubie area, and that it was not a secret.
The name of the deceased has not yet been released.
