A 51-year-old Warrant Officer attached to the Lusikisiki SAPS has been arrested and charged with corruption after he allegedly extorted a bribe from a complainant.
Brigadier Marinda Mills says the charge relates to the Warrant Officer allegedly extorting money from a vehicle owner who was involved in a vehicle accident.
Brigadier Mills says the Officer is alleged to have demanded a sum of R1500 as the case was reported a day later than it actually happened and the vehicle owner had lost his driver's licence.
The vehicle owner reported the matter to the police.
Various SAPS units were co-ordinated for an undercover operation.
The Officer was arrested while on duty and upon searching him, the money was found in his possession.
He is expected to appear in the Lusikisiki Magistrate's Court soon.
Eastern Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga condemned the incident.
He said the SAPS was serious about uprooting corruption and all forms of criminality within its ranks and equally determined to strengthen integrity in the service.
