The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has arrested an Eastern Cape police officer for Statutory Rape.
IPID’s National spokesperson Ndileka Cola says the victim was allegedly 8-years-old when this started and it was brought to the attention of the Directorate last Monday.
The officer was arrested on Thursday and will appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Friday on a charge of statutory rape.
Cola said in a statement that IPID condemns in the strongest possible terms gender-based violence and femicide, especially by officials entrusted with the responsibility of enforcing the law.
