EC police mourn loss of one of their own

Port Elizabeth police have identified the off-duty policeman who was shot dead while sitting in his private car in Motherwell.

He was the 31-year-old Constable Devin Hatting of the Mount Road police station.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge says he died at the scene.

It is believed that Hattingh had been escorting a furninture delivery truck to the township when he was shot on Monday afternoon.

Beetge says police who were in the vicinity responded to the shooting and came under fire from the suspect who fled between the houses.

"The policeman then tried to drive around the houses to see if they could get the suspect," said Beetge.

He said they arrested a man in a white Ford Fiesta with false registration plates.

"At this point in time we are seeing if he is linked or whether or not he is the suspect in the murder case as well," said Beetge.

Meanwhile, SAPS Management in the Eastern Cape expressed their deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of an off-duty Constable who was fatally wounded on Monday afternoon.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, says the member is survived by his wife, who is also a police official.
