A joint team of several Eastern Cape police units has launched a search operation for a number of murder suspects believed to be holed up in dense bushes in the vicinity of Ndlunkulu village near Mthatha.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela says police combed the area until late on Monday night and will continue their search on Tuesday.
Police have already taken a 35 year old man in for questioning and are searching the surrounding area for five more suspects following the murder at Ndlunkulu village of three people.
The bodies of two elderly sisters, aged 77 and 73, and one of the women's son - aged 46 were found in their house at the village on Monday. They had been stabbed to death in what police strongly believe to be a witchcraft-related crime.
The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta said that those responsible would not escape arrest.
She said it was shocking that people were prepared to violently take the lives of especially elderly women in the belief that a misfortune they encountered was related or caused by their elderly victims.
