A 36-year-old Eastern Cape police constable has been arrested for robbing a woman that he had given a lift.
Police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa, said that the police constable from Dimbaza police station was arrested on Tuesday night.
She says the policeman had given a woman a lift from King Williams to Alice when he turned off onto a gravel road a robbed her at gunpoint of her cellphone and bank cards.
Mawisa says the woman managed to take down the vehicle registration and after being given a lift by a motorist reported the incident to police.
The police constable will appear in court on Thursday.
King Williams Town cluster commander, Brigadier Luntu Ngubelanga, says the police constable's arrest should send a signal to other police members that corruption and crime will not be tolerated in the SA Police Service.
