Eastern Cape police commissioner, lieutenenat-general, Celiwe Binta, has welcomed the lengthy jail sentence impose on one of the province's most notorious criminals.
Sakumzi Mvoko was sentenced this week ferday to 170 years in jail on 16 counts of murder, robbery, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit robbery and illegal possession of firearms.
Provincial police spokesperson, brigadier Marinda Mills, says the court however took all the different counts into consideration and imposed a total sentence of 25 years imprisonment.
His co-accused Simthembile Zibi, Odwa Sithole and Mthuthuzeli Sisilana will all serve 25 years in prison. Bongani Same will serve 15 years in prison. The convictions are in relation to robberies which were committed in Willowvale,Tsolo, Mthatha and Ngqeleni during 2007.
These cases are mostly relating to cash in transit heists and pension pay out robberies.
After these incidents Mvoko and his gang were arrested but managed twice to escape from correctional facilities and continued with a life of crime.
During March 2011 they were re-arrested after another spree of robberies. Mvoko and some of his gang members are still facing several other charges of murder and robbery.
