Authorities are working hard to ensure compliance with Covid-19 burial regulations is upheld across the Eastern Cape.
This after numerous recent contraventions of the Disaster Management Act at funerals in the Chris Hani District.
CHDM Executive mayor, Wongama Gela, says the district, last week, reported the assault of a municipal Environmental Health Practitioner at a funeral in the Cacadu area.
This, after the family, refused to comply with the official’s set precautions to ensure that appropriate practices were undertaken to prevent direct contact with infectious human remains.
Gela says a case was opened against the said family and the two individuals involved in the assault have been arrested and already appeared briefly before the Lady Frere Magistrates Court on a charge of assault.
He says the pace at which the coronavirus is spreading requires families to adjust to the new way of life, adding that compliance is essential to curb further infections.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane last week said the Province is reaching a point where tough decisions will have to be made regarding funerals, to try to control the spread of covid-19.
The Premier proposed that only immediate family bury their loved ones and 50 mourners no longer attend.
He says funeral parlours have also complained about feeling overwhelmed regarding the coronavirus situation in the province.
