EC murder suspect surrenders to police

File

A 30-year-old man appeared in court this week in connection with the death of a man in Addo in February.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said he handed himself over to police on Tuesday and subsequently made a court appearance.

She said his court appearance related to the death of a 24-year-old man who died after trying to break into a vehicle at a construction site in Addo on 16 February.

Naidu said that he was unaware that there were people in the vehicle who then chased after him as he fled the scene.

They caught up with him and as they tried to put him in the back of their VW Golf, he managed to escape once again and ran away.

“While running he got onto the N2 and it is alleged that he slipped on the gravel road and fell over into Keeton Road. He died at the scene. An inquest docket was opened by SAPS Algoa Park,” Naidu said.

However, she a post mortem had indicated that he died due to spinal injuries due to a blunt force.

Naidu said the investigation took a twist on Tuesday when Emmanuel September handed himself over to the police and “subsequently confessed” to assaulting Givan Van der Merwe.

She said he appeared in the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court today on a charge of murder and defeating the ends of justice

September was remanded in custody to 3 December 2020 for a formal bail application.
