EC MEC to showcase road safety programmes

Eastern Cape Transport MEC, WezieweTikana, will this week showcase road safety projects implemented in line with the Expanded Public Works Programme.

This, as the country celebrates theExpanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) month.

“The projects to be showcased includes AnimalShut-Ups, Road Rangers and the installation of Gridiron Gates projects. “One of the unique challenges facing us on the roads are stray animals,” said Tikana.

“They are a constant problem for traffic officials and a major contributor to vehicle crashes on our public roads,” the MEC said.

Tikana said the appointment 1478 EPWP transport sector labourers across the province does not only alleviate poverty and unemployment, but also contributes to strengthening road safety initiatives in rural communities.

Of the 1478 labourers currently employed,557 constitutes women, 520 youth and 10 people living with disabilities. This number is expected to increase as the department fast-track the implementation of these poverty alleviation projects linked to its mandate.

“We have seen a positive impact in households and we are committed to continue on this path to bring in an additional food security net for households. We want to ensure that no family goes to bed without having a decent meal,” said Tikana.
