It's been a dark long weekend on South Africa's roads with no fewer than 40 people losing their lives in crashes countrywide.
At least 10 people were killed in accident in the Eastern Cape. This includes the horror accident on the R75 on Saturday in which three people were killed in a head-on smash.
The collision between a Mercedez Benz and an Audi happened about 17 kilometres from the Nanaga interchange.
Two women and a man were killed in the accident and two other people were seriously injured.
Meanwhile, emergency services said that at least 21 people were killed in crashes in KZN alone since Friday night.
Spokesperson Robert Mckenzie is urging motorists to drive carefully today.
Increased traffic volumes are expected on busy routes as holidaymakers return home after the Heritage Day long weekend:
Mckenzie said seven people, including a 3-month-old baby, were killed on Sunday when the vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a dam in the Maphumulo area in the Ilembe District in the KZN North Coast.
