 An Eastern Cape man is in critical condition in hospital after shooting his girlfriend and then turning the gun on himself.

Police spokesperson, lieutenant-colonel Mzukisi Fatyela, says the man went to the 27-year-old woman's home early on Tuesday morning where he shot her dead after an argument.

He then shot himself in the head.

Fatyela says he is in a critical condition in Nelson Mandela Academic hospital.

A fire-arm with the serial number filed off was found at the scene.
