An Eastern Cape man has been jailed for 14 years for causing an accident which claimed 13 lives in 2009.
Forty-three-year-old Fikile Ginyizembe was sentenced in the Mthatha Regional Court this week after being found guilty by Magistrate Sizakhele Sihlala.
He found that the state had proved its case against Ginyizembe beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case against him was reinstated last November after initially being taken off the roll due to delays in the finalisation of the police investigation.
Ginyizembe's bakkie collided with a mini-bus taxi at an intersection in Vulindlela Heights in Mthatha where the taxi had the right of way.
The vehicle overturned and caught alight killing nine people who were trapped inside.
Four other people died later in hospital.
National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali, said even though the state had called for three years imprisonment on each of the charges, it welcomes the sentence.
