A Uitenhage man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his five-year-old daughter over a 10 month period.
The 43-year-old man, whose name may not be revealed to protect the identity of the victim, was sentenced by Judge Elna Revelas in the Port Elizabeth High Court on Friday afternoon.
The man was found guilty of raping the little girl over a ten month period, after her mother died in 2009.
The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in the Eastern Cape, Tshepo Ndwalaza, says they welcome the sentence.
"We believe the sentence is consistent with these types of offences. We would also like to say that the courts have a duty to protect our women and our children against violence and abuse," he added.
