A 27-year-old Eastern Cape man appeared in court for the brutal rape and murder of an elderly aunt on Christmas Day.
Police said the suspect was remanded in custody until next Thursday when he will make his next court appearance in Peddie.
Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkholi, said police responded to a complaint at around 10 AM on Christmas Day following a report of a murder in the Rura Administrative Area in Peddie.
“The naked body of an elderly woman was found lying in bed with an electric cable around her neck. The deceased was later identified as Somikazi Ngalonkulu,” he said.
The suspect was later arrested by members of the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene, has condemned the murder of the 67-year-old woman, saying the police will ensure that the suspect is denied bail.
