George Municipality is counting the costs of the vandalism of its Christmas lights, launched with some fanfare earlier this month.
The municipality said in a statement on Thursday that vandals damaged some of the light fixtures in the CBD and at Unity Park Circle.
George is offering a reward of R2500 for information that leads to the successful conviction of vandals in court.
However, the witness will have to go on record with the authorities, but their identity will be protected.
Repair work is already underway to replace the vandalised material.
“The municipality urges the members of the public to refrain from destroying their property. Vandalism is a crime and ultimately costs ratepayers’ money,” it said.
Members of the public can report any incidents of vandalism to the police and George municipality’s law enforcement on 044 801 6350 or 044 801 6300 after hours.
