A 43-year-old Port Alfred man, who was arrested at his home last week, appeared in the Alexandria Magistrate's Court yesterday on rape charges involving two girls, aged six and nine.
Police spokesperson, Captain Luvuyo Mjekula says it is alleged that the suspect, who cannot be named because he has not pleaded, raped the two girls in a shack on a farm in the Alexandria area about two weeks ago.
He says the incident was discovered at the girls's school during an educational programme to commemorate National Child Protection Week.
Mjekula says it is alleged that one of the victims informed a teacher who in turn reported the alleged rape to a social worker who had attended the event at the school.
The social worker alerted the police and the Port Alfred Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit later arrested the suspect and charged him with two counts of rape.
The case was postponed to the 28th of June for a formal bail application, and the suspect remains in custody.
