JOHANNESBURG, June 21 (ANA) – The government on Tuesday condemned ongoing violence in Tshwane which erupted after former cabinet minister Thoko Didiza was named mayoral candidate for the African National Congress (ANC).
The violent protests in which as many as 19 buses were torched began on Monday and continued Tuesday morning with many roads in Atteridgeville and Mamelodi remaining blocked off with burning tyres.
“Government condemns in the strongest terms the outbreak of violence and destruction of property which has occurred in areas in the City of Tshwane,” said a statement issued early Tuesday by the Government Communication and Information Systems (GCIS).
“Government appeals for calm in all areas around the City of Tshwane and the peaceful resolution of differences.”
Acting Director-General of GCIS, Donald Liphoko said: “There can be no issue which cannot be resolved through democratic processes and dialogue. Members of the public are encouraged to use channels available to raise their concerns”.
Liphoko warned that violence, damage to property and infringing on others rights and free movement will not be tolerated by law enforcement agencies.
“Whilst all South Africans have the constitutional right to protest, government reiterates its condemnation against any form of violence and intimidation during protests and encourages continued dialogue to resolve differences,” said Liphoko.
Outgoing Tshwane mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has distanced himself from people protesting in his name and has backed Didiza.
