Police from Klipplaat in the Eastern Cape arrested a 41-year-old man for being in possession of “illegal cigarettes” valued at R716 000.
Eastern Cape police said the man was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning when a police patrol stopped a bakkie belonging to a business owner in Steytlerville.
Spokesperson, Captain Khaya Tonjeni, said “on searching the vehicle the policemen found fourteen boxes containing 718 cartons of cigarettes, hidden under bags of charcoal.”
He said the man was arrested under the Disaster Management Act Regulations relating to the sale of tobacco products.
Tonjeni said he is due to appear court this week.
