EC learners torch school building

Chaos reigned at an Eastern Cape school where learners torched an administration building on Tuesday night following a protest linked to the matric exams.

The Deputy Principal at the Ndaliso Senior Secondary School in Flagstaff was also assaulted.

The Eastern Cape Education Department said those learners, who had been progressed through the system, were demanding to write all of their matric papers this year.

The progression system was introduced to allow struggling learners to complete their senior certificate exams over two years.

Bhisho Education Department Head, Ray Tywakadi, said as a result of the protest, 350 matriculants did not write the English Paper 1.

He said of the 358 candidates registered at the school for the 2018 Senior Certificate Exams, 232 are so-called Progressed Learners while the remaining 126 were promoted from last year.

Police have now been called in to secure the school while the Department has called an urgent meeting in a bid to resolve the situation.

SAPS are investigating a case of arson.
