Several learners from an Eastern Cape High School have been granted bail following their arrest for the alleged gang rape of a Grade 8 learner.

The Eastern Cape Department of Education said the youths, aged between 15 and 19, allegedly raped the 13-year-old at the hostel of Maria Louw High School in June.

"A case was opened with the local police station and the police, and the boys were arrested and released on bail," said Department spokesperson, Mali Mtima.

He said the young girl was admitted to the Frontier hospital where she’s receiving medical care and counseling.

Mima says the department has also opened a case against the alleged perpetrators while disciplinary probes against the pupils are underway.

"We shall make sure that justice is served for the victim."

Education MEC, Fundile Gade, said the Department would offer support to the girl and her family.

"We are trying to speed up our investigation while methodically combing through the critical information and observing the law at the same time,”  he said.
