EC learners in court for death of 17-year-old scholar


Three Eastern Cape learners appeared in the Bhityi Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with the death of a 17-year-old learner last Thursday near Mthatha.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said the suspects, who are facing a charge of murder, and the victim were at a school farewell dance when an argument broke out.

He said one of the alleged offenders, who is 14-year-old, was released into the care of his guardian as prescribed by the Child Justice Act.

However, Tyali said the 20-year-old suspects were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on the 21st of October when they will apply for bail.

The learners are believed to be from the combined Empa Junior Secondary School near Qunu outside Mthatha.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.

The Eastern Cape Education Department has extended its condolences to the family of the deceased.
