Eastern Cape police have arrested three suspected abalone poachers and confiscated diving equipment and 477 units of abalone worth more than R162 000 on the R72 near the Fish River.
Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says a member of the K-9 unit and his four-year-old Belgian Shepherd patrol dog were conducting routine patrols on Friday when a suspicious white Ford bakkie was found parked on the roadside.
He says as Warrant Officer Tertius Neethling was approaching, the bakkie sped off at high speed and a chase ensued.
During the chase, the bakkie collided with another vehicle and veered off the road.
Nkohli says the three occupants ran in different directions and Neethling released his companion, Adze.
Neethling managed to apprehend one suspect, while Adze cornered the other two men near a thorny shrub.
The suspects, aged between 20 and 25, are due to appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate's Court on Monday.
