The latest unemployment figures for the Eastern Cape should serve as a wake-up call for the urgent need for an investor-friendly environment to retain and attract investment.
That's the word from the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber which noted that the province lost 66 000 jobs in the Second Quarter, while Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, lost 3000 jobs.
CEO, Denise van Huysteen, says the general state of infrastructure, the lack of maintenance and the limited capital expenditure available to support infrastructure projects in the Metro is a matter of concern
The Chamber's call came after Statistics South Africa reported that the official unemployment rate has surged to a record 34.4% as the formal sector shed jobs.
