The Eastern Cape Transport Department said at least four people were killed in a horror accident between a passenger bus and fuel tanker on Monday.
The fuel tanker caught alight following the accident on the N2 between East London and Kei Bridge.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, initially reported two deaths.
However, he said two more bodies were found in the wreckage of the passenger bus, including that of the co-driver.
Binqose said that the bus was travelling towards East London and the tanker was heading in the opposite direction when they collided.
Buffalo City Municipality noted in a statement that emergency services personnel were able to rescue and free dozens of passengers from the wreckage and they were taken to hospital for treatment for their injuries.
