Members of Port Elizabeth’s anti-gang unit arrested a 30-year-old hijacking suspect while on their way to work.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said the members were driving in Kwanobhule in Uitenhage on Saturday morning when they were alerted by community members about a bakery truck being robbed.
She said the members followed the truck which left a nearby shop and questioned the driver before arresting him and seizing cash, one round of ammunition, and two cell phones.
A 9mm pistol was also found in the truck.
Naidu said the firearm owner opened a theft case, alleging that his son had access to his house and took the firearm from the safe.
“The suspect is detained on a charge of truck jacking, armed robbery, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He will appear in the Kwanobuhle magistrates’ court on Monday,” Naidu said.
