A “core staff” member in the office of Eastern Cape Health MEC, Sindiswa Gomba, has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The official is also accused of taking a Department car without authorisation and that more alcohol was found in the boot of the official car when he was nabbed.
In a statement on Sunday, MEC Gomba said that “this behaviour will not be tolerated and if proven true, there will be serious consequences.”
“Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal and has been proven to be a direct cause of car accidents and other violent crimes which end up resulting in trauma cases being reported to our health facilities,” MEC Gomba said.
She said the staff member will face disciplinary action.
The Staff member was arrested in King Williams Town on Saturday and is in custody until his first court appearance on Monday.
