The United States Government has donated 50 ventilators to eight hospitals in the Eastern Cape, to support the provincial fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

US Ambassador to South Africa, Lana Marks, said that America remains “a firm partner to the Eastern Cape” in the response to the pandemic.

Marks, who held a virtual meeting this week with Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane, said: “The United States is the Eastern Cape and South Africa’s closest friend in the health realm.”

“Our two governments have been working together for nearly two decades to save lives in the Eastern Cape,” she said.

Ambassador Marks said that US support for the province’s Covid19 fightback includes additional assistance through various programs and agencies, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), USAID, and the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

She said the US support included deploying community healthcare workers in the Eastern Cape to conduct no-touch COVID-19 screening and sending epidemiologists from the CDC to assist the provincial department of health with the COVID-19 response.

The Trump Administration also assisted with training 500 caregivers to support the observation of COVID-19 patients in field hospitals.

“As it has been for the last two decades, the United States remains an unwavering friend and partner to the Eastern Cape in providing lifesaving assistance to the province,” Marks said.
