The Eastern Cape Health Department said MEC, Sindiswa Gomba, has tested positive for Covid19.
The Department said her test results were confirmed on Sunday.
“The MEC would like to advise all those that she came directly into contact with to get tested for COVID-19,” the Department said in a short statement.
MEC Gomba has since begun her period of isolation.
“She is asymptomatic and will continue with her duties working from home.”
MEC Gomba also urged people to wear their masks, maintain social distancing and to wash and sanitise their hands frequently.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will be addressing the nation on Monday evening following a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council.
The Eastern Cape Government has also confirmed that it had submitted a proposal for all beaches in the province be closed for the Festive Season in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
Bhisho also wants all public open spaces to be closed as well as part of its containment plan.
