The Eastern Cape Government has confirmed that it took a decision along with the mayors of coastal municipalities to close the province’s beaches over the Festive Season.
Bhisho spokesperson, Mvusiwekaya Sicwetsha, said the main purpose was to prevent the spread of the coronavirus which has seen a resurgence in the province in the past few weeks.
He said on Sunday this included “recreational parks” which pose the risk of becoming “super-spreaders”.
Sicwetsha confirmed that the Eastern Cape Government had communicated this to the National Government with the intention of this becoming a national decision that will cover other coastal provinces.
In a letter to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs last week, Premier Lubabalo Mabuyane announced the province’s decision saying that it was also in support of a proposal to the National Coronavirus Command Council to consider supporting it
He said the decisions taken on the closure of beaches and public open spaces had been unanimous following consultations with coastal mayors.
