The Eastern Cape Health Department has expressed its condolences on the passing of five nuns at a convent in Mthatha.
Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said that they are continuing to monitor the situation at the Mother House Convent and was providing support to it.
“We have allocated a medical doctor, nursing assistants, and a professional nurse to the Centre,” he said.
Kupelo said they also provided waste management supplies and other essentials.
“We’ve assessed the centre and concluded that they’ve got adequate facilities for self-quarantine and isolation and how these should be carried out.”
According to News 24 four nuns, all over the age of 66, died within the space of a week of Covid19 at the Centre which also serves as an old-age home.
The fifth nun reportedly died on Wednesday morning.
