A Colonel in the Hawks in the Eastern Cape has escaped going to jail after being convicted in the East London Regional Court for fraud.
Hyran Booysen was found guilty last November of submitting false travel claims in the amount of R15 000.
He was sentenced on Thursday to a fine of R80 000 or 40 months in jail.
In addition, he was sentenced to five years imprisonment, which was wholly suspended for four years with certain conditions.
Booysen must also repay an amount of R 11 961.10 to the SAPS office in Port Elizabeth.
He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
