A 41-year-old Eastern Cape funeral parlour employee has been arrested for attempting to bribe a traffic officer following a routine stop on the N2 near Makhanda.
The Eastern Cape transport department says the person was arrested on Sunday.
A spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said traffic officers stopped a bakkie travelling from the direction of Peddie with a coffin at the back of the vehicle.
He said the officer noticed that the bakkie had three occupants in the front seat, when its designed to have just one passenger.
Binqose said the driver then allegedly offered a bribe to the officer "saying she must buy herself a drink".
He said the man was immediately placed under arrest for attempting to bribe an officer, and the two passengers, who turned out to be hitch hikers, were allowed to proceed with their journey.
The funeral parlour was summoned to come and fetch the vehicle.
Binqose said the driver will appear in court on Tuesday.
